Privacy Policy

Overview

This policy describes how the ScanAIPAC mobile app and the Book of AIPAC website (together, the “Service”) handle information. The Service is operated as an open civic-information project. We do not sell personal information and we do not operate user accounts.

ScanAIPAC mobile app

Camera. ScanAIPAC uses your device camera to read printed text (for example, names on a ballot or flyer). Text recognition runs on your device. Camera images and video frames are not uploaded to our servers.

Location. If you allow location access, the app uses your approximate location on-device to suggest your U.S. state for the state ballot list. Coordinates are processed through your device’s operating-system location services (including reverse geocoding). We do not receive or store your precise location on our servers.

Candidate data. The app includes bundled candidate information and may download updated public JSON datasets from https://abidlabs.github.io/bookofaipac. These requests do not include your name, camera content, or location.

On-device storage. The app may store a small onboarding flag and cached copies of public candidate data in your device’s app storage to improve startup and offline use. You can clear this by uninstalling the app or clearing the app’s storage in your device settings.

External links. Tapping “View profile” opens the Book of AIPAC website in your browser. Your browser and that site’s policies apply to those pages.

What we do not collect. ScanAIPAC does not require a login, does not include third-party advertising analytics in the app, and does not intentionally collect personal identifiers from you.

Book of AIPAC website

The website is a static site hosted on GitHub Pages. When you visit, GitHub and your browser may process standard web server logs (such as IP address, user agent, and requested pages) as part of hosting the site. We do not operate a separate analytics product on the site.

The “Politicians from my state” feature uses your browser’s geolocation API only if you grant permission. Location is used locally in your browser to pick a U.S. state; it is not sent to our backend because we do not operate an application server for search.

Children

The Service is intended for a general audience interested in civic information. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised policy.
